Unlearning Birth Myths: Returning to the Wisdom Within

We were never meant to birth in fear.
And yet, from the moment we’re old enough to absorb stories, we’re fed a version of birth that is loud, chaotic, medical, and risky. Films show women screaming in sterile rooms. Friends pass on horror stories. Even antenatal classes often begin with a long list of things that can go wrong.
This fear-based conditioning runs deep. But here’s the truth: birth is not broken.
Myth #1: “Birth is dangerous unless managed by professionals”
This myth has disempowered generations of women. While medical care has its place, the idea that birth must be “managed” or “controlled” leads many to hand over their power before labour even begins.
Reality: Your body is not a liability. It holds ancient wisdom. Birth unfolds best when it is respected, not interfered with. When women feel safe, seen, and undisturbed, birth often flows as it was always meant to.
Myth #2: “Pain means something is wrong”
Pain in birth is painted as something to fear, numb, or escape from. But I view it differently.
Reality: Sensation in birth is communication. It is your body’s way of guiding you - telling you to move, moan, breathe and roar. Pain is not punishment. It is power moving through.
When we unlearn the fear of pain, we often discover something wild, raw, and even beautiful underneath.
Myth #3: “You can’t birth alone”
This myth tells women they must have someone else take charge—someone to monitor, check, measure, and assess.
Reality: You are never alone in birth when you are connected to your own inner knowing. You can choose who you want in your space - be it a partner, birthkeeper, sister, or no one at all. You get to decide what safety feels like. And sometimes, that means solitude, candlelight, and trust.
Myth #4: “Postpartum is just recovery time”
We’ve been taught to “bounce back,” to see postpartum as a short window of healing. But this myth denies the deep transformation that birth catalyzes.
Reality: Postpartum is a sacred rite of passage. It deserves reverence, nourishment, slowness, and support. This is when you integrate your experience, reweave your identity, and meet yourself as Mother. It is not a medical recovery - it is a soul rebirth. A time for you and your baby to learn the soft edges of each other intimately. A time to establish breastfeeding and replenish your body and soul with nourishing food and rest.
Reclaiming Birth Through Unlearning
At She Is Wild, I walk with women as they unlearn these myths and return to their innate wisdom. Together, we strip away conditioning. We question the narratives. We lean into sovereignty.
And in that space - raw, rooted, and real - we remember:
You were born to do this. You are allowed to trust yourself. Birth can be holy, powerful, even ecstatic.
